HEIC to JPG

Turn iPhone HEIC and HEIF photos into JPG files that open anywhere.

Processed on your device, nothing uploadedLast updated

To convert HEIC to JPG, drop your iPhone photos on Kilnfile's HEIC to JPG tool, set Quality (90 by default), click Convert to JPG and download the files. Decoding uses libheif compiled to WebAssembly and runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and full resolution is kept. Batches download as a single ZIP.

How do I convert HEIC to JPG?

  1. Drop your .heic or .heif files onto the drop zone, or click to browse. AirDrop or a USB cable gets them off the phone.
  2. Set Quality. 90 is the default and keeps the photo visually identical to the original.
  3. Click Convert to JPG.
  4. Download each JPG, or Download all as ZIP for a batch.

HEIC is the container Apple has used for photos since iOS 11 in 2017. It stores images with HEVC compression, so files are roughly half the size of an equivalent JPG, but support outside Apple devices is patchy. Windows 10 and 11 need a paid HEVC extension from the Microsoft Store before Photos will open one, many web forms reject the format, and older Android phones and printers do not recognise it at all. Converting to JPG solves all of that at once.

The conversion runs entirely in your browser. libheif, the open source HEIF decoder, is compiled to WebAssembly and loaded through the heic-to library inside a Web Worker. It decodes the HEVC image data to raw pixels at full resolution, the pixels are drawn to an OffscreenCanvas and encoded as a JPEG at the quality you set. A 12 megapixel photo takes around a second on a recent laptop; a batch of 100 holiday shots takes a minute or two and never leaves the device.

Quality 90 is the default because HEIC files are already lossy, and a second lossy step at 90 is very hard to distinguish from the source. The JPG will be larger than the HEIC, typically 1.5 to 2 times, because JPEG is the less efficient codec. If you want smaller output, drop Quality to 75 or 80, or run the results through Compress JPG afterwards with a Max width.

Live Photos are saved as a HEIC still plus a short video. The tool converts the still frame and ignores the video. Burst shots and images stored in a .heif container are handled the same way, and Apple's Display P3 colour data is converted to standard sRGB so the JPG looks right on any screen. Because the image is re-encoded from pixels, metadata such as capture date and location is not copied into the new JPG.

Nothing is uploaded, which matters more for personal photos than for most files: HEICs from an iPhone carry the exact GPS location where each shot was taken. There is no file size limit and no cap on the number of photos per batch beyond your browser's memory.

How it works: this tool uses your browser's Canvas and WebCodecs APIs, plus libheif for HEIC. No server is involved, so Kilnfile never sees your file. Last reviewed 20 September 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't Windows open my HEIC photos?

Windows 10 and 11 do not include an HEVC decoder by default; Microsoft sells it as a separate extension. Converting to JPG avoids the purchase and produces a file that every version of Windows, every browser and every email client can display.

Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?

A little, because JPEG is lossy, but at the default Quality of 90 the difference is invisible at normal viewing sizes. Resolution is unchanged: a 4032 by 3024 HEIC becomes a 4032 by 3024 JPG.

How do I get HEIC files off my iPhone without converting?

AirDrop to a Mac, a USB cable to a PC, or iCloud Photos on the web all transfer the original HEIC. You can also set the phone to shoot JPG in future under Settings, Camera, Formats, Most Compatible.

Will my Live Photos convert?

Yes. A Live Photo is a HEIC still plus a short video; the tool converts the still frame to JPG and discards the motion part.

Are my photos uploaded to your server?

No. The HEIC decoder is loaded into your browser as WebAssembly and runs in a Web Worker on your device. Your photos, including their location data, never leave your computer.
