Split PDF

Break one PDF into separate files by page, by custom ranges or every N pages.

Processed on your device, nothing uploadedLast updated

To split a PDF, drop it onto Kilnfile's Split PDF tool, choose Every page as its own PDF, Custom page ranges or Every N pages, then click Split PDF; the new files are created in your browser and never uploaded. Ranges such as 1-3, 4-6, 9 each become one PDF. More than one output comes back as a ZIP.

How do I split a PDF into separate files?

  1. Drop a PDF onto the drop zone, or click it to choose one from your device.
  2. Under Split by, pick Every page as its own PDF, Custom page ranges or Every N pages.
  3. For custom ranges, type them into Page ranges, for example 1-3, 4-6, 9. For every N pages, set Pages per file.
  4. Click Split PDF.
  5. Download the single result, or click Download all as ZIP when the split produced several files.

Split PDF reads your document with pdf-lib in the browser and copies the pages you asked for into brand-new PDF files. Nothing is re-rendered, so text stays selectable, images keep their original resolution and each output is the same quality as the source. Each new file contains only the pages you chose, which is why splitting a 40 MB scan into chapters also gives you smaller, easier-to-send pieces.

The three modes cover the common jobs. Every page as its own PDF is for pulling a 12-page document apart into 12 single-page files, handy for scanned receipts or signed forms. Custom page ranges lets you describe exactly what you want: 1-3, 4-6, 9 produces three files, the third containing only page 9, and a single range such as 5-8 simply extracts those pages into one PDF. Every N pages cuts the document into equal chunks, so Pages per file set to 2 turns a 10-page booklet into five two-page files. Page numbers are counted from 1 and ranges outside the document are ignored.

There is no limit on page count or file size beyond your device's memory. A 300-page document splits in a couple of seconds on a laptop. When the result is more than one file, the download button packs them into a ZIP; a single result downloads as a plain PDF. Encrypted PDFs need to go through Unlock PDF first, and if you later want some of the pieces back together, Merge PDF will join them without any loss.

Your file never leaves your computer or phone. The split runs entirely in the browser tab, nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored and there is no account to create. That makes it a sensible choice for bank statements, contracts and medical records where uploading to a server would be a concern. The tool is free and adds no watermark.

How it works: this tool uses pdf-lib and PDF.js (Mozilla), open-source libraries loaded into your browser. No server is involved, so Kilnfile never sees your file. Last reviewed 20 September 2026.

Frequently asked questions

How do I extract just a few pages from a PDF?

Choose Custom page ranges and type the pages you want, for example 4-7 or 2, 9, 15. Each comma-separated range becomes one PDF, so a single range gives you one file with just those pages.

Why did I get a ZIP file instead of a PDF?

When a split produces more than one PDF, the outputs are bundled into a ZIP so you get one download instead of dozens. Unzip it on your device to see the individual PDFs. If there is only one result you get a plain PDF.

Does splitting reduce the quality?

No. Pages are copied, not re-rendered, so text, images and vector graphics are identical to the original.

Can I split a PDF that has a password?

Remove the password first with Unlock PDF, which needs the correct password, then split the unlocked copy.

Is there a maximum file size?

No fixed limit. Everything is processed in your browser's memory, so very large scans of several hundred megabytes may be slow on a phone, but there is no cap set by Kilnfile.
