PNG to JPG

Convert PNG images to compact JPG files, choosing a quality and background colour.

Processed on your device, nothing uploadedLast updated

To convert PNG to JPG, drop your PNG files on Kilnfile's PNG to JPG tool, set Quality (90 default) and a background colour for transparent areas, click Convert to JPG and download. JPG has no transparency, so transparent pixels are flattened onto that colour. For photos the JPG is usually 5 to 10 times smaller, and nothing is uploaded.

How do I convert PNG to JPG?

  1. Drop one or more PNG files onto the drop zone.
  2. Set Quality. 90 is the default; 75 to 80 gives smaller files for web use.
  3. Set Background for transparent areas as a hex colour. The default #ffffff is white.
  4. Click Convert to JPG.
  5. Download the JPG, or Download all as ZIP when converting several.

PNG and JPG are built for different jobs. PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos and interface graphics but wasteful for photographs: a photo saved as PNG is often 5 to 10 times larger than the same image as a JPG with no visible difference. Converting is the quickest fix when a form rejects a PNG, an email attachment is too big or a web page is slow because of oversized images.

The tool decodes each PNG with createImageBitmap in a Web Worker, paints the chosen background colour onto an OffscreenCanvas, draws the image on top and encodes the canvas as JPEG. That order is what handles transparency: JPEG has no alpha channel, so every transparent or semi-transparent pixel has to become a solid colour. White is the sensible default for documents and product shots. Enter #000000 for black, or the exact hex of the page background the image will sit on so the edges blend in.

Quality 90 is deliberately conservative because you are converting from a lossless source and probably want to keep it looking untouched. For images going on a website, 75 to 80 saves another 30 to 40% of the file with no change most people would notice. Text-heavy screenshots are the one case where JPG struggles; sharp edges pick up faint ringing, so keep Quality at 90 or above or leave those as PNG.

Resolution is unchanged. A 2400 by 1600 PNG becomes a 2400 by 1600 JPG. If you also want it smaller in pixels, use Resize Image, which can convert to JPG in the same pass. Any text or EXIF metadata chunks in the PNG are not carried across.

Files are converted on your device and never uploaded. There is no size limit or file count limit, and a batch of several files is packaged as a single ZIP for download.

How it works: this tool uses your browser's Canvas and WebCodecs APIs, plus libheif for HEIC. No server is involved, so Kilnfile never sees your file. Last reviewed 20 September 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to transparency when converting PNG to JPG?

JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the Background colour you set. The default is white. Semi-transparent edges are blended onto that colour so there is no jagged outline.

How much smaller is a JPG than a PNG?

For photographs, typically 5 to 10 times smaller at Quality 90 and more at 80. For simple graphics with few colours the saving is smaller, and a well compressed PNG may even be the smaller file.

Will the JPG look worse than the PNG?

JPEG is lossy, but at Quality 90 the change is invisible on photos. Screenshots with crisp text or hard-edged graphics can show slight fuzziness around edges; keep those as PNG if that matters.

Can I convert lots of PNGs at once?

Yes. Drop them all in, choose the settings once and click Convert to JPG. The results are offered as one ZIP file.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in a Web Worker inside your browser using the Canvas API. Your images stay on your device.
