PDF to Word

Extract the text of a PDF into an editable Word document, right in your browser.

To convert a PDF to Word, drop it onto Kilnfile's PDF to Word tool and click Convert to Word; the .docx is built in your browser and never uploaded. It extracts text and paragraph breaks into an editable document. Complex layouts, tables, fonts and images are not recreated, and scanned PDFs produce no text because there is no OCR.

How do I convert a PDF to Word?

  1. Drop one or more PDFs onto the drop zone, or click it to choose them.
  2. Check that the PDF contains real text: if you can select words in a PDF viewer, it will convert; if it is a scan, it will not.
  3. Click Convert to Word.
  4. Download the .docx file, or click Download all as ZIP if you converted several PDFs.
  5. Open it in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs and tidy any headings or spacing.

PDF to Word reads each page with PDF.js, the open-source renderer from Mozilla, and pulls out the text runs in reading order. It then looks at the vertical gaps between lines to decide where paragraphs end, and writes the result into a standard .docx file that Word, Pages, LibreOffice and Google Docs all open. What you get is clean, editable text, which is what most people need when they want to reuse a letter, quote from a report or fix a typo in a document they no longer have the original for.

Be clear about what is not rebuilt. A PDF stores glyphs at coordinates rather than a document structure, so there is no reliable record of columns, tables, text boxes or which font was used. Kilnfile does not try to guess: tables come out as lines of text, multi-column pages are read column by column, images are left out and fonts revert to the Word default. If the layout matters more than the words, keep the PDF and convert individual pages with PDF to JPG instead.

Scanned PDFs are the biggest source of disappointment. A scan is a photograph of the page, and this tool does no optical character recognition, so the resulting Word file will be empty. The quick test is to open the PDF and try to highlight a word: if nothing selects, it is a scan. Password-protected PDFs need to go through Unlock PDF first. There is no limit on page count or file size beyond your device's memory, and a 100-page report converts in a few seconds.

Conversion runs entirely in your browser. The PDF is never uploaded, nothing is stored, and there is no signup, watermark or file limit. If you only want the words without a Word file at all, PDF to Text gives you plain text you can copy straight from the page.

How it works: this tool uses pdf-lib and PDF.js (Mozilla), open-source libraries loaded into your browser. No server is involved, so Kilnfile never sees your file. Last reviewed 20 September 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Word file empty?

The PDF is almost certainly a scan, which is a picture of text rather than text itself. This tool has no OCR, so it cannot read scanned pages. Try selecting text in a PDF viewer: if nothing highlights, it is a scan.

Will the formatting look the same as the PDF?

Not exactly. Text and paragraph breaks are kept, but tables, columns, fonts and images are not recreated. Expect a clean draft you can format in Word rather than a copy of the page.

Can I convert a password-protected PDF?

Remove the password first with Unlock PDF, which needs the correct password. Then convert the unlocked copy here.

What programs open the .docx file?

Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, Apple Pages, Google Docs and most other word processors open .docx files directly.

Is my document uploaded?

No. The text is extracted with PDF.js in your browser and the .docx is written on your device. Nothing is sent to a server or stored.
